Written by James: I got into a car accident yesterday morning. This picture shows how the front left of my car crumpled from the impact.
I was driving in the exit lane on I-15 northbound towards the 12300 South exit. Traffic in all other lanes was very slow due to rush hour, but my lane was moving pretty fast since it was an exit-only lane. There was a semi-truck in the lane directly to my left and in front of me. Suddenly, a large Ford F350 box truck pulled out from in front of the semi perpendicular to the freeway! All I saw was the broadside of the truck and it was impossible to avoid. He cranked his wheel left toward the ramp and I slammed my brakes and pulled toward the shoulder, but we were too close and we collided.
My window exploded and I hit my head against the car frame above the door. I didn't move for several minutes. The truck had my car pinned against a cement wall so it's not like I could get out of the car anyway and it all happened so suddenly that I actually wasn't really sure if I was okay since I had just hit my head.
The police officer explained to me that the driver of the truck had been hit in the rear by another car just minutes before. He was trying to get off of the freeway onto the shoulder. He thought that he was pulling into a shoulder, when in fact he was pulling directly into my path in the exit lane. He was cited for causing the accident. However, I am now car-less, they towed it away.
I spent several hours in the ER yesterday getting X-rays on my neck and spine. Luckily, everything is fine. But my neck is super sore and I'm sitting around wearing a stupid neckbrace. I spent the rest of the day calling insurance companies and trying to get the ball rolling. They sure do work slow. I need a rental car at least so I can get around in the meantime. Either way, it is frustrating because I was not at fault, but still I'm the one who has to go for weeks without a car and is having all of the pain.
